Brick Chimney, Twin Caps & Roof Flashing

Project Overview

A red-brick chimney rises through a gray shingle roof, with two different metal caps positioned above its flue openings. A broad gray crown closes the top of the masonry, and white metal flashing follows the base where the chimney meets the slope.

Close views examine the brick courses, mortar joints, cap surrounds and crown edges. A wider roof-level view connects those details to the full chimney stack and surrounding roof, providing both an overall composition and a record of the individual junctions.

Analysis

The two flue openings have distinct forms. One has a rounded metal mesh surround beneath a shallow cap; the other has a taller rectangular mesh enclosure above a red clay-colored opening. Both sit above the crown, which projects slightly beyond the upper brick course.

At the base, the roof slope creates an angled intersection with the vertical masonry. White flashing forms a contrasting band across that junction, with folded corners and a visible upper edge against the brick. The photographs document these exposed details; they do not establish the condition of the internal flues or a complete earlier construction history.

Process

The supplied record concentrates on the assembled chimney. Two close angles document the cap shapes and the surface of the crown, including the mortar line beneath its edge. The wider view then places the complete stack on the roof and shows the flashing band across its lower face. No demolition or intermediate rebuilding stage is included, so this story describes the visible assembly rather than assigning an unrecorded repair scope.

Outcome

The chimney has a clearly defined masonry profile above the gray roof. Red brick, a gray crown, bright metal caps and white flashing each remain distinguishable, making the top and bottom junctions visible from different viewpoints. Three detailed images record the exterior result without implying an unseen flue assessment or performance test.

Project Details

Materials Used

  • Red bricks and gray mortar form the rectangular chimney stack.
  • A gray masonry crown spans the top around the two flue openings.
  • Metal caps with mesh side enclosures cover the round and rectangular openings.
  • White sheet-metal flashing wraps the visible roof-to-chimney junction.
  • Gray shingles surround the chimney on the pitched roof.

Methods & Techniques

Brick courses alternate their joints across the visible faces of the stack, with gray mortar marking the horizontal and vertical divisions. Above, the crown follows the rectangular chimney perimeter while leaving the flue openings distinct. At roof level, the flashing is formed to suit the slope and turns around the corners of the masonry. The gallery makes the layered roof, flashing and brick relationship easy to read.

Key Highlights

  • Two differently shaped metal cap enclosures sit above the chimney crown.
  • Close views record brick courses, mortar joints and the crown perimeter.
  • White flashing follows the angled meeting line with the gray shingle roof.
  • A wider view connects the cap and flashing details to the complete stack.
