Natural Timber Deck & Centered Staircase
Project Overview
A natural timber deck extends along the rear of this light-sided home, creating a broad platform beneath an existing awning. A central staircase projects into the yard, while wood rails and closely spaced timber balusters continue around the raised perimeter. Pale diagonal lattice closes much of the space below.
The project includes both exterior views and a detailed look at the floor. The close view shows the grain, knots and fastening lines of the timber boards, including a perpendicular center board that separates two sections of the decking pattern.
Analysis
The staircase divides the front railing into two long sections and establishes a central approach from the lawn. From the side, the platform's depth and the return of the stair railing become apparent. The awning stays against the house above the door-side portion of the deck.
The surface has a consistent natural wood palette, but its components perform different visual roles: flat deck boards form the floor, broader timber rails define the top edge, and slender vertical balusters create the enclosure. Diagonal lattice introduces a second pattern beneath the horizontal deck fascia. The gallery records these visible components without assigning an unseen foundation design.
Process
The documentation moves between the stair approach, an oblique exterior angle and a close view of the board installation. The close view makes the board spacing and rows of visible fasteners legible. Exterior views then connect those floor details to the railing, stairs, fascia and lattice. The photographs depict the assembled deck rather than a full sequence from excavation to finishing.
Outcome
The assembled platform and centered stairs give the rear facade a single continuous timber feature. Consistent wood tones link the deck, railing and stair surfaces, while the pale lattice defines the area beneath. Four photographs provide an overall understanding of the outdoor structure as well as the individual boards that make up its floor.
Project Details
Materials Used
- Natural timber deck boards retain visible grain and knots across the floor.
- Timber stair treads and riser faces continue the wood finish down to the yard.
- Wood posts, upper rails and vertical balusters form the perimeter and staircase railings.
- Pale lattice panels create a diagonal pattern below the platform.
Methods & Techniques
Parallel decking boards are laid across the platform, with a perpendicular timber divider creating a clear line through the floor. The staircase is framed by rails on both sides, and its posts align with the deck railing above. Around the outer edge, timber fascia forms a straight horizontal band over the lattice. Visible metal connectors sit at some lower support junctions; their specifications are not supplied.
Key Highlights
- A centered staircase divides the front railing into balanced sections.
- Timber grain remains visible across the deck and stair treads.
- A perpendicular floor board separates two parallel decking runs.
- Diagonal lattice contrasts with the straight posts and vertical balusters.
