Split-Level Roof: Framing to Gray Shingles

Project Overview

A light-sided split-level home receives roof work across its staggered roof planes. The upper and lower sections meet around a brick chimney, while the rear roofline includes a smaller covered area above the patio. Gray shingles provide a consistent finish across the documented covered slopes.

Eight images capture an unusually broad view of the work. Ground-level photographs record exposed rafters and underlayment stages, while roof-level angles examine shingle courses, chimney flashing, pipe penetrations and a capped vent. The record connects the exterior profile to the individual roof details.

Analysis

The house's different heights create several roof edges rather than one continuous rectangle. The front and rear perspectives show how the main slope relates to the raised side section, chimney and lower cover. Looking down the roof makes the changes in plane and the separate penetrations easier to distinguish.

In the open stage, rafters are exposed above the siding and removed materials lie on ground sheets beside the house. The prepared stage replaces that open profile with sheet underlayment across the visible planes. Covered views then show staggered shingle courses and formed metal around the chimney. Each stage offers a different level of detail about the assembly.

Process

The construction record begins with open rafters and debris from removed roof materials at ground level. Another overall view captures crew members working on the underlayment-covered roof. The covered-stage photographs then examine the main slopes, ridge, chimney junction and smaller penetrations at close range. This progression establishes the visible change from an exposed roof structure to a shingled surface without assigning dates or a duration to the work.

Outcome

The covered roof presents a consistent gray palette across the photographed sections of the split-level home. The brick chimney remains prominent, with its metal base detail clearly visible against the shingles. Broad and close views together provide a useful record of the roof's overall profile and its smaller junctions, with the preparation stage retained as part of the project story.

Project Details

Materials Used

  • Timber rafters are visible where the roof covering has been removed.
  • Sheet underlayment covers the prepared main and raised roof sections.
  • Gray shingles create the layered surface across the documented slopes.
  • Dark brown metal flashing surrounds the brick chimney at roof level.
  • Pipe flashings, a roof vent and matching ridge pieces appear within the covered roof.

Methods & Techniques

The photographed covering uses overlapping shingle courses that follow each roof plane. Formed chimney flashing creates an upright metal band against the brick and a lower flange at the shingle surface. Separate boots or collars frame the smaller pipe penetrations. At the ridge, covering pieces turn over the meeting line of two slopes. These exterior details are documented from several angles rather than inferred from a single distant view.

Key Highlights

  • Eight views connect ground-level preparation with rooftop surface details.
  • Open rafters, underlayment and installed shingle stages are all represented.
  • Chimney flashing is documented beside pipe and vent penetrations.
  • Gray covering visually ties together the home's staggered roof planes.
