Chimney

Stone Chimney Roof Cricket & Flashing

Project Overview

A small shingled roof cricket meets a tan stone chimney in this close exterior detail. The cricket’s raised center divides the two sloping sides, while copper-toned metal follows a stepped outline across the masonry behind it. Gray shingles connect the smaller roof shape to the larger surrounding surface.

The close viewpoint concentrates on the point where three different geometries meet: the vertical chimney face, the cricket’s angled planes and the stepped metal band between them.

Analysis

The central ridge leads directly toward the chimney, giving the detail a clear axis. On either side, the shingles slope away from that ridge and meet the masonry through the visible metal surfaces.

The metal’s stepped upper edges contrast with the irregular tan stone faces and mortar joints. Its warm color also makes the junction stand out against the cooler gray roof, even within the tightly framed view.

Process

The documented component sequence runs from the gray shingle planes to the raised central ridge, then to the stepped metal at the chimney. This close view isolates the exterior junction so the relationship between those parts can be examined without the distraction of the wider roof.

Outcome

The cricket, ridge and metal band form a distinct detail against the tan chimney. The shared gray shingle surface relates the smaller roof shape to its surroundings, while the stepped copper-toned outline defines its meeting point with the stonework.

Project Details

Materials Used

The visible assembly consists of tan stone masonry, light mortar joints, gray roof shingles and copper-colored sheet metal. Ridge-shaped shingles cap the center of the cricket.

Methods & Techniques

Shingle courses follow each side of the cricket, with a separate overlapping line along its raised center. The metal detail changes height in steps across the chimney face rather than using a single straight upper edge. Together, these patterns show how the smaller angled roof shape meets the vertical masonry.

Key Highlights

A raised cricket ridge meets the chimney face. Stepped copper-toned metal outlines the junction. Gray shingles follow both angled sides. A close view records the arrangement of roofing and masonry.
