Twin-Flue Chimney Crown Restoration

Project Overview

This chimney crown project is documented with a clear comparison of the surface around two capped flues. The earlier view shows a weathered gray top with cracks, dark patching and uneven areas around the clay flue openings. The later view records a much more uniform gray crown surface around the same flues and metal caps.

The project is concentrated at the top of the chimney rather than its entire masonry body. That tight coverage makes the central change easy to examine: the relationship between the crown surface, the raised flues and the perimeter metal edge.

Analysis

The older crown has visible cracks running between and around the flues, with several dark repair areas breaking up the surface. Those marks are part of the supplied before record; the photographs do not establish when the damage began or whether there was an internal leak.

In the later view, a continuous gray finish replaces the irregular appearance of the earlier top. The metal hood and screened sides remain above the visible clay flue, while the crown surface meets the flue base and perimeter trim. The important distinction is the restored top surface, which can be compared directly with its photographed earlier condition.

Process

  1. Before: the wider crown view records cracking, dark patching and weathered areas around both flues.
  2. After: the close view records the more even gray surface surrounding the capped flues.
  3. Detail comparison: the flue openings, cap screens and perimeter trim provide fixed reference points for comparing the crown surface.

Outcome

The supplied comparison shows a visibly more uniform chimney-top surface while retaining the flue and cap arrangement. It provides a focused before-and-after record of the crown, with the photographed exterior change kept separate from any internal chimney work that was not documented.

Project Details

Materials Used

  • Gray cementitious crown surface around the two flues.
  • Terracotta-colored clay flue openings visible above the crown.
  • Metal caps with screened sides over the flues.
  • Light-colored metal trim around the crown perimeter.

Methods & Techniques

The visible treatment centers on making the crown surface continuous around the flue bases and along the outer edge. The cap hoods and screens remain identifiable in the comparison. No cap brand, coating specification or unseen liner work is inferred from this exterior crown record.

Key Highlights

  • Genuine before-and-after crown comparison.
  • Two flue openings and metal caps in the same chimney top.
  • Cracks and earlier patching visible in the before image.
  • A continuous gray finish in the later view.
